Morning IV of VII
Return to Ground
Setting down the stone
You have carried much, and carried it well. This morning, we honour the weight, and practise setting a little of it down.
You carry so many things: responsibilities, the people you love, old griefs, quiet hopes, the daily effort of simply keeping on. To carry is not a failing. It is a sign of how much you care, how much life has asked of you, and how much you have already given. There is dignity in it.
And yet nothing alive is meant to hold without ever letting go. The river carries the stone only so far, then sets it down and keeps flowing. This morning we practise the same gesture: not abandoning what matters to you, only loosening your grip enough to remember that you are more than the things you hold.
The practice · a few slow minutes
A recorded version will live here soon; for now, let the words below guide you.
- Settle where you are, take a few slow breaths, and feel the ground holding you.
- Bring to mind one thing you have been carrying. You do not need to solve it; only let it be present with you.
- If a small stone or object is near, hold it in your palm, and let it become that weight for a moment. If not, imagine its weight resting there.
- Feel it honestly, and offer yourself these words: "I see how much I have carried. It makes sense that I am tired."
- When you are ready, open your hand and set it down. Feel your palm empty and light. "For this moment, I set this down. It will be here if I need it, and so will I."
- Notice your breath, your shoulders, your hands. Let them be a little freer than before.
A question to sit with
What would it feel like to hold this a little more lightly, just for today?
An invitation to nature
Find a stone outside today. Hold it for a while, and let it carry something for you. Then place it back in the earth, with quiet thanks, and let the ground keep it a while.
